The home is currently occupied by the homeowner, who is living with Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the homeowner’s elderly sibling, who is battling cancer for the second time, and the sibling’s child who is recently recovering from a stroke. One major concern revolved around their ability to safely navigate the kitchen due to the deteriorated floor. The homeowner, who has difficulty walking, faced a trip hazard as the floor was in poor condition. Moreover, walking aids, both with and without wheels, would often get caught in the broken tiles, causing further damage and increasing the risk.
To address these challenges, the Operation Renovate team, along with a group of dedicated youth volunteers, took charge. They skillfully removed the old flooring and replaced it with waterproof laminate planks, ensuring durability and safety. Additionally, the team provided valuable guidance on replacing a leaking tub valve, which had been causing continuous hot water flow in the bathroom. This timely assistance not only helped complete the project efficiently but also resulted in significant savings on electrical costs by preventing the water heater from being overworked.
Overall, these interventions significantly improved the living conditions for the occupants, minimizing hazards and enhancing their comfort and well-being.
